This Thursday, 20 January 2022, there will be a vote in the European Parliament to decide whether Big Tech companies should be allowed to target EU citizens with surveillance ads.
This is an amendment to the Digital Rights Act which, if passed, could be a game changer. Big Tech lobbyists are hard at work trying to persuade MEPs to vote against this amendment. We need to make our voices heard and make sure it gets passed.

The company would offer primary care services alongside continuous health monitoring through a subscription-based program, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Real pity the beta is full as Apple really limits the numbers on TestFlight.

Apple's Facetime is coming to the devices via weblinks and not native apps, and still no RCS announced for iMessage
Android and Windows users now (really links don't work on Linux???) so that these users can join Facetime calls. But the point is Android and Windows (and Linux?) users cannot initiate Facetime calls to their friends. This basically cripples Facetime usage for most who have friends, colleagues and clients that don't all use iOS.
I was also hoping for RCS to be included in iMessage (again for cross-platform modern messaging across Android, iOS and other devices). It may be though that with RCS fully adopted that could cripple WhatsApp and similar messengers (well Apple has made major swipes already at Facebook, so I'm sure they'd not back away from taking a swipe at WhatsApp).
Other items of interest to me from Apple's WWDC 2021 were:
* Existing iCloud services will, at no extra cost, get a VPN service (Private Relay) and private e-mail (basically unlimited extra iCloud mail addresses which forward mail to your primary address).
* Digital identification to start for certain airports and US States but like Apple Pay should hopefully spread elsewhere soon.
* The Health app will more easily identify trends and changes over time, including mobility tracking and capturing a new walking
Steadiness Metric to assess your fall risk. Also seems like they will not just capture your cholesterol (and other) scores, but go a step further now to help interpret what the changes mean.

Apple announces AirTag for finding your lost items - Big Plus is the Network and Privacy, but it is Pricey
Apple said AirTag keeps location data private and secure. No location data or history is stored inside the accessory, and communication with the Find My network is end-to-end encrypted. Apple said AirTag has also been design with a set of proactive features that discourage unwanted tracking.
This could likely change the game a bit for location trackers as 3rd party tags can also make use of the network. But it is not at all cheap at $29 each or $99 for a pack on 4.

Apple Launches Study into Whether Apple Watch Can Detect COVID-19 (Other devices could do so too if they did the research)
A previous independent study by Mount Sinai researchers found that an Apple Watch can effectively predict a positive COVID-19 diagnosis up to a week before current PCR-based nasal swab tests, which may be reinforced by the findings of this new study.
Enrolment is open now for individuals in the greater Seattle area who are age 22 or older and have an Apple iPhone 6s or newer.
Most of the results coming out now for diabetes and atrial fibrillation are based around algorithm detections based on HRV, heart rate, oxygen levels, etc so nothing groundbreaking or new, it's just a question of doing the research which Apple is doing for their device. I had a Fitbit which clearly, in retrospect, showed my sharply elevated resting heart rate about 3 days before I was hospitalised with a viral infection, but the software gave no warning and I only saw it when I was analysing the data manually afterwards. I sold the Fitbit and bought an Apple Watch...

Why? Well because some third party apps for services like XMPP and Mastodon have really cryptic names and icons and I really can never remember what services they are for. This solves that problem once and for all!

Clockology has some of the best 3rd party watch faces for Apple Watch and this is how to install and use it
The only issue many have, is how to install and use it properly because of Apple's idiosyncrasies, so this video does help explain that. One thing to note about the wake screen setting is the menu option has changed, so instead you long press on the watch face and choose Stay Alive.
Unfortunately many watch face groups are on Facebook but you need not login especially for the Hong Kong one, and there is also a sub reddit for Clockology.

Apple Watch 7 and the Galaxy Watch 4 could get blood sugar sensors which would allow people with diabetes to monitor blood sugar levels non-invasively
It’s unclear how the Apple Watch would deliver glycemia readings, but AppleInsider found four new Apple patents that describe tech that could be used for measuring blood glucose through the skin.
If so this could be pretty big as diabetes affects very many people, as well as so many who are not aware that they have it. Even if this is not as accurate as actual blood testing, just having an always on tracking ability to show relative peaks or troughs could mean a lot to many. But as of now there is no actual conformation yet from Apple or Samsung.

A Mighty Wind: Meta-post Discussion of the Volte-face in online media and politics
Twitter and Facebook have banned DJT, GooglePlay have banned Parler, Apple appears ready to, and more, as ... scattered over numerous posts. @Joerg Fliege suggests:
I think we need a meta post to discuss this sudden change in Twitter/Facebook/Google/Apple[?]/Reddit[??] behaviour. Together with all the resignations from the White House it does feel like the wind is coming from a new direction.I aim to please (though my aim is poor). Here's that meta post.
(And I continue to be reminded of stories from my grandma, who lived through Hitler’s regime. The amount of people who suddenly decided to burn their uniforms in Spring 1945 was amazing. They all turned up later, well embedded in the new administration, mind you.)
I'll collect other links in comments, though the inspiration post is Google pulls Parler from Play Store for fostering calls to violence.
Also: Twitter have permanently banned Trump:
